Rowe Camp Alumni News

Chris O’Brien

You probably didn’t miss it, but I did ... Chris O’Brien was on Garrison Keillor’s Prairie Home Companion, the Liberal Unitarian NPR radio show. Chris came to camp for seven years and then was on T-Camp staff for seven years. He was one of six acts selected from close to 1000 entries for their “People in their Twenties” talent show. Oh, you missed it too? A Prairie Home Companion has posted the show on their website: To hear the broadcast, log on to: prairiehome.publicradio.org/programs/2007/04/21/

Well, here’s what it said about Chris on the web-site: Chris O’Brien, from Somerville, Massachusetts, picked up the guitar after he saw Shawn Colvin and the Indigo Girls in concert when he was twelve. He continued to study the instrument around campfires at the Rowe Center, a summer camp in the foothills of the Berkshire Mountains. Struck by his passion to learn the guitar, family friend Dar Williams taught him to play his first chords. By age 14, he was writing his own material. Chris spent a few years in Oregon and then traveled home to Massachusetts, regularly gigging at The Iron Horse in Northampton for open-mic shows. He later moved to Cambridge where Bay State Sound featured him on their compilation CD, Boston’s Best Singer-Songwriter Showcase, Vol. 4. He just released his debut CD Lighthouse. Joining Chris onstage for the show are Charlie Rose (bass) and Lyle Brewer (guitar). Though Chris didn’t win, the program got a lot of exposure. WE ARE PROUD OF HIM!

Holly Thompson and Matt Morrison are expecting another baby at the beginning of June. Holly wrote that Annie, their 3-year old (can it be?) entertained all at Holly’s birthday playing the guitar and singing such old favorites as “Turn on the Night Light.”

Simon Delekta announced his engagement to the lovely Kelly Moran. They plan to be married in October of 2008, plenty of time to save up for that sterling silver tray or even the All-Clad sauce pan!

Ilyza and Andy Earle’s wedding

Simon is just following in the path of our dear Mark Taylor, who got married to Stephanie Morin this Spring. He and Stephanie kept everyone guessing. I hear Matt Morrison found out he was to be a groomsman on the day of the wedding. All reports are that it was a lovely wedding, and all of us up here in the hills wish them the very best. We also send the best of luck to Mark, who will be taking the bar in New York State this summer. I happened to see Mark being interviewed about the Republican convention on the tv news not too long ago. Our Mark on NYC news!

Ilyza Mann and Andy Earle got married at the Rowe Chapel on Sunday, May 20th, followed by a terrific reception in the Farmhouse. They are now living in Charlemont, just down the road.

Karin Broadhurst has been coming to Rowe Board meetings and acting as though she wants to be part of it. She certainly has the energy and ideas that come in very handy in a board member, and it is so much fun to see her on a regular basis.

Ada Beatrice Paessel

Noah (Fields) and Hannah Paessel have a beautiful new daughter Ada Beatrice Paessel, born on February 1st. I just got the announcement. She is a beauty. Another future Rowe camper. Keep them coming!

Andrew Plummer is one of the new co-directors for the Gay Men’s Labor Day Retreat this year and we look forward to working with him. You can read about the program he and his co-director have put together on page 7.

John Muse, former Sr. High Camp Co-Director and Vickie Funari came to visit with their 4-year-old daughter, Celeste, aka Celli. Vickie and Celli fell in love with my friend Carol’s goats and her little farm, and John has threatened to take action if his visit costs him three acres and a herd of goats. John will be teaching at Haverford College on the Philadelphia Main Line for a couple of years, and we hope to see more of them.

Kieran Lally tells me that Nick Meyer is at the California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland. I’m sure I’ll get to see him while I’m out there. Kieran is still at the Hungry Ghost bakery in Northampton, making heavenly bread and playing music, but I don’t get to see him nearly often enough.

Anyhow, as they say on that UU Liberal program, “That’s the news from Lake Woebegone” or Rowe Camp.

Love,

Margaret
