The Rowe Zone - Winter 2007

Rowe Camp

Here we are at the start of a new year and, as always, you all have been busy, so there is a lot to talk about. First of all: Andrew Plummer and Sarah Hougen put on a very successful Diversity Benefit at First Church in Cambridge. Karin Broadhurst was there as a helper. She did a great job in organizing the 80s reunion in September. Arjuna Greist was there as both a helper and a performer. Mike Moran sang some of his songs. He was there with a Labor Day contingent. Andrew’s brother performed with his guitar. Eddie Hougen and Rachel performed some of their original songs together. Mike Cohen came and told a story. One very nice surprise was the appearance of Ian St. Germain. It is a long time since we’ve seen his nice face. It was a lovely evening with great entertainment, nice food, and a good silent auction.

Jodi, Herold and Simone Edel Seraphina Dunaway
We are in the midst of another baby boomlet! Sarah and Sandeep Green-Vaswani had a son, Ezra, in September. Anna Westley and Brendan Flannelly-King brought forth Eamon David Flannelly at home on November 3. Simone Edel Seraphina Dunaway was born at home also on November 4. Her proud parents are Jordi Herold and Elizabeth Dunaway Smith. Ilana Greenstein and her husband Manuel had a daughter, Izel, on January 6. Holly Thompson will produce a sibling for Annie in June. If there were other babies, please let us know and send pictures. We love babies!! We expect to hear later in the winter from Noah and Hannah Paessel that their heir has arrived.

Kathy Wolcott, now Kat Quinn, proudly announced that her husband, Sean Quinn, has formally adopted her son, David. Congratulations to the new family.

Many 90s campers will remember Jaylin Stahl and her funny and lovable brother, Glenn, who worked diligently in the kitchen. Glenn always wore ‘boarder clothes and a huge smile. Anyway, he died of a drug overdose in July. There was a memorial service at Alice and Amy’s house. About 200 people attended, and you would have recognized many folks. It was very sad, and that sadness was compounded in November by the death of Jaylin’s dad in an auto accident. Our community sends love to Jaylin and her family.

Sarah, Ezra & Sandeep Green-Vaswani

I was visiting my daughter Julie in California early in December and had dinner with Elinor Roberts, who still lives in Berkeley. I met Kieran Lally the other day, and he told me he had been out there at the same time, visiting Vlad, who lives in Oakland.

Bob Scheier.is on the Rowe Board. It is great to have him around. He still has that wonderful smile. He complained that I even have Felicity calling him “Bobby!” He and his wife come to lots of events with their daughter, Marissa, who keeps up the family tradition as a camper. Bobby also supplies news of his family as well as the Swikes.

Kevin Hale was at a conference in December. We had a good chance to reminisce about the old days. Kevin is a rabbi, and his main occupation these days is as a restorer of Torahs that have grown old from use or been damaged in some way. It is more complex than I have made it sound.

We also met at the funeral of Lyalya Herold, who many campers of the early 70s will remember from camp reunions held at the Herold home in Hancock. All the Herold sibs were present at the memorial, of course. It was good to see everyone, even under such sad circumstance.

The camp reunions held over the Martin Luther King’s birthday weekend were lots of fun. It is amazing to see everyone in the winter and realize how much even a few months can change young people. Elijah Bergman was present at both days. His mother, Wendy Coe, was a camper and member of the support staff. Elijah is a student at Oberlin, where he must feel very much at home with all the other Rowies!

The New York City Diversity Fund Benefit will be held again on April 14. If I don’t see you before, I’ll see you there. Have a great winter, and come see us when you have time.

Love from, Margaret

Eamon David Flannelly
