The Hurricane Effect: Achieving Optimal Health

John Douillard
January 25-27

John Douillard has been studying nutrition, fitness, and weight management for 25 years and has come to some simple and startling conclusions. A competitive tri-athlete, he began by looking for the "Runner's High." Soon he found that what makes exercise euphoric is the same for any type of peak human performance. Then he found that this was the key to weight loss and overcoming depression and anxiety. A chiropractor, he found he was treating the cause of many chronic illnesses using this same formula, which he now believes is the key to the door of our spiritual potential as well.

In 1990, he proved that, using certain breathing techniques while doing vigorous exercise, you could achieve the same nervous-system and brain-wave calm found in deep meditation. Breathing is the key. We only use about 20% of our respiratory potential and about 10% of our brain power. He calls his simple formula the Hurricane Effect. The bigger the eye of the hurricane, the bigger the calm in the center. The more powerful the winds, the more productive we can be. In other words, stress is found in the winds of the hurricane, where most people live. John Douillard believes he can teach how to live and breath in the eye of the hurricane, how to establish a nervous-system calm in even the most stressful situations. Situations that normally push us over the edge can be shaken off like water off a duck's back.

He believes his ideas are also proved in the research lab that never changes: Mother Nature. Using an annual cycle, She's been feeding us for tens of thousands of years. It takes a year to meet our nutritional needs. We naturally store protein and fat in the winter, cleanse ourselves with low-fat foods in the spring, and get high-carbohydrate fruits and vegetables in the summer.

Exercise can become something that makes us feel good while doing it and even better afterwards. If it feels good, we'll do it. We get the best results when we go with the flow of nature. You can lose weight and eat more real food by listening to nature's intelligence that waits silently inside you.

He will take us step by step through a routine of life, including diet and exercise, based on an Ayurvedic health map, but translated into an American way of life. He will use this same formula to show how natural it is to live in the eye of the hurricane and how to take this calm into any situation or activity. This natural way of life could be the most important spiritual and health tools you will encounter.
