A Village of Living Music: Music for Everyone

Paul Winter
June 7-9

Music can be like water, bathing us in sound, dissolving fear, allowing us to feel whole again. For 25 years, in addition to concerts and 30 albums, Paul Winter has pioneered a method of teaching improvisation as a form of simple musical conversation. He creates an environment free from judgment, free from performance pressure, a context in which music-making is as natural as breathing. Explore "beginner's mind," where there is no such thing as a wrong note. Musicians and "non-musicians" alike are invited to draw on instinct, using the voice or an instrument to converse with sounds and improvise with music in the same way we improvise with words. A world full of song is the possibility.

We hear many sounds in nature and accept them all; expression is satisfying, yet we're one of the rare species that censors it. In its place, we pay other people to do it for us. The more we express ourselves, the more we interact spontaneously, the happier we'll be.

Bring an instrument, from a kazoo to a contrabassoon, whether or not you think you can play it, and don't forget your voice. No musical experience is required. The rich sound textures you will create with others will amaze you. In the unknown, your faculties come alive to guide you, and you are alive the way an animal is alive in the wilderness. It's exhilarating! This workshop costs an extra $20.

Paul Winter has an amazingly deep love of and respect for music and for nature. He believes that this planet is one life form and that each part of that form is valuable and worthy, a view he has held with integrity, imagination, and vision for 30 years. Two craters on the moon are named for his recordings, and he's played in over 30 countries, including a dozen trips to Russia. He has communed with, listened to, respected, and joined voices with wild animals, particularly endangered species. His style is accepting, direct, and light-hearted, enabling others to open their hearts and let the music flow. It's been years since Paul's last wondrous visit, and he is one of our favorite people on the planet. We encourage you to sign up now to experience the fullness of the spring in the midst of exquisite sounds.

"My goal is not to have my fans celebrate me, but to celebrate themselves. I think music can bring us into aliveness; it revives the life force." - Paul Winter
